"On [Jehuda Ben Tema] mawiał: pięcioletni - do [nauki] Tory, dziesięcioletni - do [nauki] Miszny, trzynastoletni - do [spełniania] przykazań, piętnastoletni - do [nauki] Gemary, osiemnastoletni - do małżeństwa, dwudziestoletni - do zabiegania [o utrzymanie], trzydziestoletni - [jest w pełni] sił, czterdziestoletni - [ma] rozumienie, pięćdziesięcioletni - [może] doradzać, sześćdziesięcioletni - [jest] stary, siedemdziesięcioletni - [jest] sędziwy, osiemdziesięcioletni - [posiada] moc, dziewięćdziesięcioletni - [jest] zgrzybiały, stuletni jest jakby już umarł, odszedł i zniknął ze świata."
Tefilin przedstawione na obrazie chłopiec zakłada po raz pierwszy, gdy ukończy trzynaście lat i staje się dorosły według halachy. Wokół tekstu wypisane są alfabetem Rasziego cyfry od 1 do 613, będące aluzją do 613 przykazań (tarjag micwot), które chłopiec musi spełniać po ukończeniu trzynastu lat.

''[Yehudah ben Tema] say: A five-year-old begins Scripture; a ten-year-old begins Mishnah; a thriteen-year-old becomes obliged to observe the commandments; a fifteen-year-old begins the study of Gemarah; an eighteen-year-old goes to the marriage canopy; a twenty-year-old begins pursuit [of a livehood]; a thirty-year-old attains full strenght; a fory-year-old attains understanding; a fifty-year-old can offer consuel; a sixty-year-old attains seniority; a seventy-year-old attains a ripe old age; an eighty-year-old shows strenght; a ninety-year-old becomes stooped over; a hundred-year-old as if he were dead, passed away and ceased from the world".
